Rolling and Finishing Lines Consultant
Provided world-wide engineering services to the metals industry for the sales and start-up of industrial equipment. Expert with electrical distribution systems, utility cost analyses, annealing furnaces, annealing atmospheres, steel slitting lines, aluminum punching operations, and steel metallic coating. Provided foreign consulting services for steel slitting lines and annealing department analysis and enhancement recommendations in Mexico, annealing furnaces and annealing atmospheres in India, leveling and cut-to-length lines in China, and steel slitting lines in Panama.
Engineering Manager, Rome Strip Steel Company, Inc.
A major producer of low carbon, high carbon, alloy and high strength low alloy strip steels, precision cold rolled strip steels in standard coils, oscillated (traverse wound) coils and cut lengths.
Managed entire plant engineering and maintenance function, supervised 4 engineers, three foremen, and 21 technicians, recruited and trained personnel, dealt with government bodies, engaged contractors, and acted as the company's spokesman. Was responsible for the design, specification, procurement, installation, start-up and maintenance of equipment that enabled the company to progress to become a premier strip steel operation in the United States. Completed $7,000,000 three stand cold strip mill on schedule. Designed the mill. Specified, purchased, expedited, contracted for, and supervised the installation and start-up of all the equipment for the mill. Completed a $5,000,000 single stand reversing mill. This mill started on time. Created the concept for, supervised the design of, installed and supervised the start-up of a slitting line that layer winds the slit strip. It was the first of its kind in the USA which would wind a "perfect" sidewall without spools or sidepans. Purchased and installed 17 annealing furnaces. Designed and completed 4 building expansions, and a new electrical substation, designed and installed new sewer and water systems to effect a zero discharge plant.
Specified, purchased, and installed heat recovery units and water recirculation equipment for energy savings. Initiated participation in Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. experimental electrical service classification. This rate saved the company about $9,000/month on an electrical bill of about $90,000/month. Initiated the purchase of a 115KV substation from the local utility so that Rome Strip and its industrial neighbor could save money by receiving power at a higher voltage.
Initiated the negotiations for Rome Strip and its industrial neighbor to be purchasers of NUG-generated power to save money in the face of the utility’s ever higher electrical rates.
Started the purchase of customer-owned gas for transportation to the facility. This activity saved about $9,000/month on gas billings of about $35,000/month.
Electrical Engineering Consultant
Serviced, designed, sold, and built specialty control panels and electrical equipment.
Maintenance Superintendent, Plant Electrical Engineer, Crucible Steel Co.
Supervised 20 foremen and about 250 workers to maintain equipment in this specialty steel rod and bar facility. Equipment included everything from four electric arc furnaces to a blooming mill, continuous rod and bar mill, wire drawing machines, annealing furnaces, finishing machinery, and associated plant support equipment such as boilers, substations, cooling water systems, etc. As plant electrical engineer, supervised three foremen and twenty + men to maintain all the electrical equipment, and to design and install all new electrical equipment, such as the115KV electrical substation, a continuous rod and bar mill, and a 15,000 KVA electric arc furnace.
Electrical Superintendent, Reynolds Metals Co., McCook, IL
Was in charge of 85 electricians, eight foremen, two electrical engineers, two draftsmen, and two secretaries. Designed, installed, and maintained all plant equipment. This was one of the two or three largest aluminum rolling mills in the United States.
