Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering Consultant

Provided executive level management advice, market research, in-depth technical analysis, market forecast computer modeling, product conceptualization, detailed design and system prototyping for equipment, systems and materials suppliers. Provided conceptual design, process flow, tool list, layout, modeling and economic analysis for a number of large, state-of-the-art fabs. Conducted technical surveys and detailed market modeling with forecasts or projection of market potential versus time for specific technology capabilities and products. Designed and prototyped manufacturing equipment, including their computer/PLC control systems. Worked with thin-film equipment and materials, including epitaxial silicon, polysilicon, thermal oxides, APCVD dielectrics (doped and undoped), LPCVD dielectics (doped and undoped), Plasma enhanced LPCVD, evaporated metals, sputtered metals and CVD metals. Applied thin-film knowledge in active regions, conductors and insulators in the manufacture of LSI/VLSI/ULSI semiconductor integrated circuits, and in some non-semiconductor applications. Provided expertise in environmental issues with regard to recycling chemicals, plastic, water, etc. as well as processes which use less to begin with. Designed and prototyped a number of items which utilize recycled plastic from numerous sources as well as equipment for recycling. Used AutoCad 13 in 3-D for preliminary design and conventional wood and metal fabrication techniques for prototyping. Also, provided expert witness services on a number of patent infringement cases.

Director of marketing and sales (VP level), a semiconductor equipment supplier

Was responsible for multi-million dollar project management and general international marketing management. Functions included management of operations, development, business partnerships, marketing (including literature, advertising and trade shows) and sales. Contributed to multi-million dollar business plans and developed detailed financial plan computer modeling, with the associated presentations to venture capitalist and government agencies. One project involved a 13 sub-system, cleanroom robotic work cell demonstrated at SEMICON WEST.

Manager, Wafer Fab Equipment Automation, Intel Corp.

Responsibilities included developing corporate automation strategy/tactics and implementation via in-house staff and vendors. Staff developed and improved electronic, computer and mechanical (including robotics and computer vision) automation systems for state-of-the-art production wafer fab equipment. Many of the concepts/strategies staff developed have stood the tests of time, recessions and massive re-organizations. Projects included automation of thin-film processing operations.

Engineering Supervisor/Manager, Intel's

One of six technical members of the original factory start-up team. Responsibilities rotated through all areas, including thin-films depositions and etching, and included a staff of about 50 engineers, technicians, clerks and specialists. Served as factory liaison and traveling member of the critical corporate technology development/transfer task force. (The weekly meetings of this team included now COB Gordon Moore.) Pioneered numerous techniques and procedures for the monitoring and control of factory operations. Bottom line accomplishment was radical improvement in product yields.

Supervising Engineer, Intel's original Fab 1, Mountain View, CA

Was responsible for manufacturing introduction of the company's key new products during that era. These included the historically significant first 8080 microprocessor chips and several generations of DRAM, SRAM and EPROM. Pioneered what is now known as “New Technology Engineering” (NTE).

Laboratory Assistant, Solid State Processing Lab, Oregon State University

Worked with the installation of donated wafer processing equipment.
