Major Research Accomplishments
Research emphasizes on the development and evaluation of predictive models for forming operations such as drawing, extrusion, rolling, and sheet forming. Operations are directly applicable to automobile, aircraft, and consumer industries. In this research various experimental techniques have been developed for quantifying boundary conditions along the die-work interfaces in forming operations. These techniques have not only improved the predictive capabilities of finite element methods but also provided better physical understanding of the interfacial conditions. Such predictive models form the essential part of an applied Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system concerned with accurately manufacturing dies and tools for the production of consistently good quality parts. A list of publications is given below.

Manufacturing Sciences Laboratory
At the University of Michigan, developed and directed Manufacturing Sciences Laboratory by acquiring various testing equipment and computational facilities in order to carry out the above mentioned research. The research sponsors were National Science Foundation, General Motors Corporation, Chrysler Corporation, Inland Steel Corporation and several other organizations. Also directed Manufacturing Laboratory at KFUPM involving casting, welding, machining, plastics processing facilities designed for teaching and research.

Industrial Experience
Investigated transfer press deflection, parallelism, and alignment characteristics during the production of metal stampings at General Motors Corporation. Studied split problems in stamping of vehicle’ door panels at Chrysler Corp. Carried out experiments at Inland Steel Corporation to verify the numerical analysis of strip rolling process. Improved the quality of cold-rolled sheet metals. Conducted numerical-experimental analysis on strip drawing for making cans at US Steel Corporation. Resulted in better understanding of the frictional behavior along die-strip interface. Developed analytical model and conducted experiments on cropping thin-walled tubes for nuclear reprocessing industry UK. Analyzed and modified the structural frame used for testing large tires as a part of quality control and curing process at Dunlop Corp.

Project Management
Managed sponsored research from research organizations and industries in the area of manufacturing. Established manufacturing sciences laboratory and directed research activities at The University of Michigan. Supervised 4 doctoral theses and several undergraduate student projects. These theses involved experimental and computational procedures for evaluating product quality in industrial operations such as sheet forming, rolling, and drawing applicable to automobile, aircraft, and consumer industries. Directed manufacturing laboratory comprising of conventional and CNC machining, welding, forming, and casting facilities at KFUPM. Supervised 2 MS theses and several undergraduate student projects. Responsible for supervising 12 technicians and their annual evaluations.

Consulting Experience
Developed template for automotive industry that involved business scenarios on discrete manufacturing and repetitive manufacturing using business software based on production planning. Conducted feasibility studies in terms of setting up steel mills for small-scale production.
