Expert Review Panelist, Division of Design and Manufacturing Systems, National Science Foundation, Washington, DC

Served as an expert review panelist, providing expert advice to facilitate grant decisions. Served on several review panels in the Division of Design and Manufacturing Systems, including the Strategic Manufacturing Initiative, a joint National Science Foundation and Department of Defense initiative.

Panel Chairman and Expert Reviewer, Ben Franklin Challenge Grant Program For Technological Innovation, Ben Franklin Technology Center of Western Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh, PA

Was responsible for reviewing R&D proposals in the areas of Advanced Materials Processing and Computer Applications. Served as Chairman of the Manufacturing Systems Review Panel.

Staff Engineer, Fabricating Technology Division, Alcoa Laboratories, Alcoa Center, PA

Contributed to development and application of technology for the manufacture and scale-up of mill products, bench, pilot and production scale equipment, applicable in work in flat rolled products, forging, extrusion, drawing and powder metallurgy. Was instrumental in the success of Alcoa's profile and flatness control system. This work was conducted as a part of Alcoa's $300 million hot strip mill modernization program. Dr. Kennedy developed a model that calculated the stresses produced in the strip as profile was changed. Also developed and directed a comprehensive experimentation program involving both laboratory and production rolling mills to validate the model. Alcoa's Davenport, Iowa and Maryville, Tennessee hot strip mills successfully implemented the technology and demonstrated significant improvement in profile control. Also successfully transferred technology for the analysis and design of the shape rolling process from Battelle, applying the technology to improve the roll pass design sequences at Alcoa's Massena, New York 12-stand rod mill. Served as Quality Improvement Team Facilitator, accumulating nearly 2000 hours of experience in team facilitation.

Researcher, Engineering and Manufacturing Technology Department, Battelle Memorial Institute, Columbus, OH

Developed a model for computer-assisted analysis and design of the shape rolling process, under sponsorship of the American Iron and Steel Institute. Eight steel companies (6 domestic and 2 foreign) and 1 aluminum company purchased the model, successfully applying the model to develop new roll pass designs for better dimensional control and surface quality in commercial rod and bar mills. Collaborated in the development of a technique for analyzing the shape rolling process using the finite-element method of analysis for Bethlehem Steel Corporation.

PUBLICATIONS
Numerous publications related to on-line viscoelastic analysis for predicting the difference in longitudinal stress and profile in strip and plate, methods of analysis for predicting profile and spread in hot rolling, three-dimensional metal flow analysis for shape rolling, methods for analyzing spread, elongation and bulge in flat rolling, computer-aided analysis of metal flow, stresses and roll pass design in the rolling of a refined analytical model for side spread in the rolling of flat products, lubrication of drawing and extrusion operations by solid coatings, and side spread in the rolling of flat product.
