National Science Foundation REU Program, Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY
Performed toxicity assays on the rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus using thallium as a function of potassium concentration to ascertain toxicity threshold in aquatic organisms. Discovered and developed a toxicity ratio of thallium to potassium that dictates organism survivorship potential and reaffirmed similar toxicity assays using a common alga.
Capstone Project, Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY
Drafted undergraduate thesis to analyze the speciation of thallium in natural water. Conducted scavenging experiments with the radioisotope 204-Tl to discover the biotic factors influencing thallium speciation, the main factor in toxicity potential. Designed and executed experiments testing the in-vitro sorption capabilities of Illite and Kaolinite clays to thallium.
Independent Study/Limnology Laboratory Assistant, Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY
Presented results at the Great Lakes Research Consortium, at SUNY ESF. Became well versed in the use of Spectroscopy, Coulter Counter, Liquid Scintillation Counter, GPS, Microbial Growth and Harvesting and various other analytical equipment and procedures.
