Senior Materials Engineer, Matco Associates
Diagnosed, planned, developed cost estimates, and executed technical programs for diverse clients to diagnose and solve failure problems from limited information. Located leaks in a carbon steel heat exchanger and determined to be fatigue cracks after careful dissection of parts. Developed test to measure the hydrogen gas evolved during short time exposure of removing stored spent fuel from storage pool. Site visit and laboratory study discovered root cause corrosion problem at stainless welds to be conventional iron contamination in an unusual form. Brittle cracking at a weld was found related to high strength steel in the as-welded condition. Damaged metal was examined to estimate when damage occurred for insurance purposes. Estimated time of manufacture for aged fencing materials in disputed boundaries cases. Studied reasons for sporadic bonding failures at a galvanizing line. Determined cleaning issues to be at fault. Developed a team approach to non-destructively examine a large tower, possibly damaged during shipment, well after its erection. Several technical parties were involved. Examination of a large heat exchanger uncovered underlying interactions between weld fabrication, design, and a carbon-containing atmosphere, along with service conditions. Examination of large welded stainless steel assembly found that welding techniques, adequate for room temperature use, were inadequate for cyclic temperature exposures. Experience was able to suggest solutions for the client.
Allegheny Ludlum Metallurgist, Shanghai Stal Precision Stainless Steel, Shanghai, China
Provided in plant technology transfer assistance to AL joint venture partner. Transferred stainless steel production techniques through the social and technical paths found in China. Visited Chinese customers for stainless steel. The spectrum included both modern appliance plants and more traditional operations.
Research Associate, Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation
Extensive work with tubing customers using TIG and high frequency welding to resolve non-obvious complaint problems. Solutions were found in both the steel plant and in the customer’s plant. These solutions were presented/sold to management of internal and external organizations. Addressed fabrication issues involved in making steel parts, considering internal issues to the steel and its manufacture and external issues related to the customer's manufacturing processes. Dealt with welding issues, TIG or resistance processes, joining of coils through rolling and annealing operations.
Coordinator “Manufacturing Excellence Program”, Allegheny Ludlum Leechburg finishing plant
Managed an employee based quality program involving over 100 salary and hourly personnel organized into teams. Developed new solutions to quality problems by combining information from plant people and internal financial reports in action plans. Presented results and coached team members to present these results to executives.
Supervisor Materials Processing, Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation
Led group of 9 engineers and technicians improving aspects of finishing stainless and electrical steels. This involved programs that rolled, annealed, and acid pickled stainless steels.
Research Metallurgist, Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation
Used metallurgy and mechanical engineering skills to help plants produce stainless steels and to help customers to use this steel. Welding and forming were interests. Worked with customers finding uses for new alloys.
General Electric
Engineering training program participant at Knolls Atomic Power Lab working on irradiated metal. Service at Steam Turbine in Schenectady.
