ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE

Research Experience: Initiated and conducted ongoing research programs in the area of electromagnetic propagation, scattering, antenna design, radar imaging and numerical modeling, based on theoretical analysis, computer simulation of realistic problems and experimental validation. Wrote reports and papers for publication based on this research, as well as research proposals for continued support. Graduate students were advised and supported as part of the overall research program.
Electromagnetic Propagation and Scattering Studies: Electromagnetic (EM) propagation in complex environments and scattering by large targets of relatively arbitrary shape (radar cross-section) were studied using hybrid combinations of high-frequency asymptotic and numerical methods. Realistic geometries were modeled using computer aided design tools. Innovative methods have been developed for the analysis of EM field propagation and scattering in multi-bounce environments, including the generalized ray expansion (GRE), paraxial Gaussian beam and elliptic ray-tube tracking, and iterative physical optics (IPO).
Antenna Radiation and Coupling on Shipboard and Aircraft Platforms: The EM radiation from antennas aboard naval vessels and on aircraft, and their coupling to other onboard antennas, was studied to ascertain antenna/platform interaction effects and EM compatibility. Numerical methods, such as the finite element method (FEM) and the method of moments (MoM), were used to analyze the complex antenna geometry, and efficient high-frequency asymptotic methods, such as the uniform geometric theory of diffraction (UTD), physical optics (PO) and the physical theory of diffraction (PTD), were used to track the radiated fields in the exterior environment. Very realistic scenarios have been addressed with this hybrid approach.
Fast Integral Equation Methods: The numerical efficiency of the iterative physical optics method and iterative algorithms for integral equation problems was greatly improved by reducing the time and memory requirements of the impedance matrix-current vector product computation. An asymptotically improved fast multipole method was developed which reduces both the time and memory cost of this O(N 2) operation to O(N 4/3) (where N is the number of basis functions in the discretization of the equivalent current). The asymptotic phasefront extraction (APEx) method has also been developed to remarkably reduce the number of basis functions by exploiting the high-frequency asymptotic nature of EM fields.
Radar Scattering from Targets on a Rough Surface: Computational algorithms were developed for analyzing the radar scattering from targets on, above or below a rough surface, such as a ship on a rough sea. The Generalized Forward-Backward method was used to rigorously model the composite rough surface and target geometry. The rough surface may greatly affect the RCS of such targets. Robust methods based on plane wave spectral decomposition were developed which allowed general purpose RCS codes to be easily modified to account for a random rough surface environment.
Radar Imaging of Buildings: The radar scattering from realistic building structures was studied and imaging algorithms were developed for obtaining the interior layout and contents of an unknown building. Accurate wall models were used to reduce the distortion and obscuration effects of looking through a complex wall, including a model for imaging through periodic structures such as cinder block walls.
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID): RFID systems were studied and optimized, with emphasis on the propagation of RF signals from the reader to the RFID tag. New antennas have been developed and patented for providing a custom-designed uniform coverage of a desired volume of space containing an arbitrary number of RFID tags. The system has been optimized for item-level tagging on retail or warehouse shelves, and in large cargo containers. An RFID portal system for doorways and warehouse docks has also been developed and patented.
