Provided design work relating to the revamp and complete re-design of several Electric Arc Furnaces in Canada and the USA, involving stress calculations for the new supplied equipment and for the increased capacities of the furnace. This work involved stress calculations for the furnace structure under the new loading conditions for increased production requirements and the new loading that would be transferred to the existing foundations, and the solutions to support these extra loadings.

Expert Witness, NKK/Trico
Was expert witness for NKK/Trico litigation regarding supplied furnace volume and strength concerns to provide the promised annual production of the Electric Arc Furnace. Calculations were performed to prove the supplied equipment was sufficiently strong and of sufficient capacity to provide these production promises as per contract. NKK succeeded in this litigation.
Vice President, Engineering, Fuchs Systems, Inc, Salisbury, NC
Was administration of Engineering department. Was responsible for supervision of engineers (approx. 30) and coordination and design of furnace structural, and water-cooled component engineering drawings. Was actively involved in all design processes relating to in-house projects. Was actively involved in the design of new technology relating to the design of Electric Arc Furnaces with our parent company in Germany including the development of the “Shaft Furnace” design. Fuchs builds customized Electric Arc Furnaces and Ladle furnaces for the steel making industry.
Chief Engineer, Dynex Engineering Inc., Whitby, Ontario, Canada
Was responsible for the design and shop detailing for in-house fabrication of melt shop equipment including continuous casting machine elements, run out tables, transfer cars and tundishes. Was responsible for the design and detailing of electric arc furnace component replacement and upgrading, including the design of water-cooled elements on the furnace and water-cooled ductwork for pollution control systems. Duties included stress analysis by finite element method, material specification, and liaison with client, feasibility studies, and shop supervision during fabrication and field supervision during installation.
Vice President Engineering/Chief Engineer, EMPCO Canada Ltd., Whitby, Ontario, Canada
Was responsible for the design of electric arc steel melting furnaces and related equipment in melt shop, including hot metal ladles, scrap charging buckets, hot metal tundishes, transfer cars, water cooled elements for refractory replacement in furnace walls and roof, water cooled ductwork for pollution control systems, and hot metal ladle turrets. Was responsible for design and stress analysis for all projects in-house and for feasibility studies and new equipment development. Responsibilities also included project management, material specification, pneumatic and hydraulic system design, initiating of all engineering functions, liaison with client, purchasing, checking of all drawings for final issue to in-house fabrication, supervision of engineering department of 15 engineers and designers. Provided supervision of equipment fabrication in-house and field supervision of installation of supplied equipment.
Senior Piping Designer, Sandersons Engineers, England
Involved in flexibility analysis of piping and supporting systems for high temperature, high- pressure main boiler systems for power plant of petro chemical plant. Complex piping systems for modular units for North Sea Oil Drilling Platforms. Transferred to Saudi Arabia to work as senior mechanical engineer at Aramco Oil Refinery. Was responsible for team of engineers and designers upgrading piping systems on offshore tanker loading terminals.
Mechanical Engineer, Lake Ontario Steel Co., Whitby, Ontario, Canada
Plant engineering design work related to the rolling mill and the melt shop, including roll conveyors, repeaters for cross country mill, coiler entry conveyors, uploopers, automatic angle stacker, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, plant services and re-design of arc furnace pollution control system. All projects included design, draughting, project management and installation supervision.
