Provided guidance on the properties and fabrication of materials used in transportation structures and bridges. Planned and supervised engineers and technicians on research projects concerning use of metals and alloys, concrete and plastic composites, fatigue, welding, and materials testing. Represented the bureau on structural alloys and movable bridges to DOTs, Federal and city government, universities, and industry.

Chief Metallurgist, Danly Machine Div, Avondale Industries

Was responsible for materials engineering for a large manufacturer of mechanical presses up to 4000 tons capacity for the worldwide automotive industry, including Ford, GM, Chrysler, Hyundai and Honda. Activities included materials selection, heat treatment, weldability, fatigue studies and failure analysis, and approval of all design drawings involving materials. Performed special RandD projects related to die sets and stamping presses, saved $1,500,000/yr in die set production costs by introducing AISI 12L14. Was representative on productivity, safety and environmental issues.

Principal Engineer, Container Corp of America (former subsidiary of Mobil Corp)

Was responsible for the corrosion, metallurgical and welding problems of a large paperboard and packaging subsidiary of Mobil ($2 billion sales; plants in 26 states), including RandD planning and execution of projects and materials engineering consulting. Typical project areas included weld cracking in digesters, fatigue studies of rotating plant machinery, fracture of dryer rolls, and paperboard-metallic foil composites. Represented the corporation on technical matters pertinent to metallurgy, fracture and forensics, welding and corrosion on domestic and international purchases of machinery, insurance, litigation and technical services.

Principal Investigator, Construction Engineering Research Laboratory, US Army Corps of Engineers

Engaged in research and development of methods and materials to resist degradation of Army and Air Force military and civil works construction. Performed consulting and failure analyses for Army installations and various Federal agencies. Investigated means of increasing the life of facility systems through improved designs, materials, specifications, operating procedures, cost analysis and computer models. Supervised engineers and technicians on technical and project basis. Wrote many Army manuals, regulations, specifications, NTIS and internal reports, and theoretical journal articles.

Civil Engineering Officer, Strategic Air Command,US Air Force

Held several positions involved with the maintenance, repair and construction of defense facilities for Minuteman ICBMs, B-52 bombers, KC-135 tankers and F-106 fighter-interceptors.
