Engineering Consultant

Provided consulting services to Mallinkrodt, Anderson Window, Keltech Engineering and Rexnord Engineering.

Product Engineering Manager/Development Engineer, Cherne Industries

Increased airflow rate of size constrained valve assembly by over a factor of five. Developed ultra low-pressure injection molded valve, including assembly and testing stations, for production (500,000 units per year). Developed a line of elastomeric test equipment for production, aluminum disk sealing systems, and large strain elastomeric tubes. Extensive FEA modeling of elastomers and polymers.

Product Development Engineer, Reuter Manufacturing

Conceived, modeled, and developed instrumentation and performance enhancements to motor oil centrifuges. Finite element analysis (FEA-ANSYS) of cryogenic seals, machine shop fixturing systems, motor oil centrifuges, rotary vane actuators. Computational fluid dynamic analysis (CFD-FIDAP) of motor oil centrifuge, fluid jets, and filter systems. Transient 3-D CFD analysis of cardiac by-pass graft system (results were presented at FLUENT User’s Conference, problem solved on CRAY C90).

Engineering Consultant

Clients included Medtronic (analysis and development of blood pumps (FIDAP-CFD and ANSYS- FEA), proposed, designed, and analyzed blood pump subsystem, designed and built laser diode flow visualization system), and Spine-Tech (analysis of spinal implants using ANSYS-FEA).

Engineering Manager, Product Development, Keltech Engineering

Designed and implemented modifications to a 3M laminating system for their next generation laminator (this development generated a patented laminator modification kit permitting their new 30” proofing material to be run on 3M customer’s existing laminators instead of requiring purchase of new machines). Structural analysis (ANSYS-FEA) of laminator structures and mechanisms for 3M, window and door frames for Anderson Window. Computational fluid dynamic analyses (FIDAP-CFD) of a fluid drawing die and of a web handling air turn system. Both projects were for 3M. Design of Experiments on 3M laminating system, wrote computer programs to solve heat transfer and structural problems, and oversaw work of technicians.

Product Development Engineer, EGR Company

Research and development of a five-passenger, vertical takeoff, powered-lift aircraft. Designed and built test equipment and deflected slipstream airfoil test sections to determine slipstream deflection, moment, and lift coefficients. Designed and built automatic flight control system for an aerodynamically unstable model. Designed and built model aircraft radio telemetry system for pitch rate and aircraft airspeed.

Engineer, Northeast Instruments

Designed and manufactured camera shutter testers for photographers (production of 6000 units), sidereal clocks for astronomers, temperature controller for photographic darkroom, memory expansion boards for personal computers. Wrote and produced advertising, promotional, and instructional material.

PUBLICATIONS
Authored materials on computational fluid dynamics simulation of blood flow in cardiovascular systems. Awarded patents for enhanced breathing capacity air admittance valve, connector assembly for air admittance valve, air admittance valve, junction for shear sensitive biological fluid paths, and a lamination defect remover.
