Responsibilities included safety, reliability, and performance of competition vehicles. Specified every adjustable aspect of competition vehicles at every stage of running. Includes: brake system, steering system, ballast, suspension geometry, suspension springs, shock absorbers, gear ratios, differential, aerodynamic configuration, tire pressures, and engine settings. Documented races via formal race preparation notes, post event reports, and faults lists. Called race strategy during races (when to pit, how much fuel to add, what tires to fit). Managed and executed development projects in collaboration with other team members.

Assistant Race Engineer, Champ Car World Series

Responsibilities included assisting race engineer in his duties. Was primarily involved in data analysis, simulation, race strategy, and development projects.

Responsibilities as 7 post rig engineer included optimizing ride / grip of racecar via spring and damper tuning in the lab. As damper development engineer was responsible for developing new damper specifications using existing components and collaborating with damper manufacturer (Penske) to implement development hardware.

Was responsible for design and development of an integrated set of race engineering analysis tools. Managed a small group of developers. Software capabilities included vehicle component data management, comprehensive setup logging, data viewing, and analysis tools – quasi-static simulation, suspension, aero, and gear analysis, and ballast calculator.

Test Team Assistant Race Engineer, Precision Preparation Inc., Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

Performed comprehensive sensor checks, troubleshooting, and field repairs and supported race engineer in analyzing data for car handling and performance.

Development Engineer, Precision Preparation Inc., Rancho Santa Margarita, CA

Performed 7 post rig testing – some methods development, but mostly as directed by race engineer. Designed and developed various engineering software tools including dynamic ride and handling package, race strategy, damper and aerodynamic analysis.

Mechanics Training Program, Russell Racing School, Sonoma, CA

Was responsible for complete maintenance of 2 Formula Mazdas and 2 Formula Fords. Learned fundamental skills required of a race mechanic including car build from bare chassis to running vehicle, gearbox rebuild and setup, car alignment and setup, and basic vehicle maintenance.

Engineer, Acoustics and Structural Vibrations Department, Engineering Technology Center, Mystic, CT

Applied experimental and simulation methods to research and development of submarine silencing. Projects included prediction and experimental validation of the sound in the water resulting from the motion of machinery internal to the submarine, finite element analysis of rubber vibration isolating pipe hanger, transfer function testing of a Trident submarine suspended close to an array of hydrophones.

ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE

Research Assistant, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA
Developed a machine diagnostic system for motor operated valves. Characteristic changes in transient machine vibration caused by various machine faults were predicted using an analytical model composed of lumped and continuum elements. Prototype system was built which included sensor hardware, data acquisition system, signal processing, and a machine health prediction algorithm.

Co-Op Student Engineer, Ford Motor Co. and AC Rochester, Michigan and New York
Worked at both Ford and the AC Rochester division of General Motors. At Ford, developed new predictive and experimental methods for reducing noise, vibration, and harshness. At AC Rochester, performed analysis used in fuel injector design and development, and worked as a production supervisor in a department that assembled exhausts gas re-circulation valves.
