Race Engineer, Champ Car World Series, RuSPORT, Loveland, CO
Responsibilities included safety, reliability, and performance of competition vehicles. Specified every adjustable aspect of competition vehicles at every stage of running. Includes: brake system, steering system, ballast, suspension geometry, suspension springs, shock absorbers, gear ratios, differential, aerodynamic configuration, tire pressures, and engine settings. Documented races via formal race preparation notes, post event reports, and faults lists. Called race strategy during races (when to pit, how much fuel to add, what tires to fit). Managed and executed development projects in collaboration with other team members.

Responsibilities as 7 post rig engineer included optimizing ride / grip of racecar via spring and damper tuning in the lab. As damper development engineer was responsible for developing new damper specifications using existing components and collaborating with damper manufacturer (Penske) to implement development hardware.

Was responsible for design and development of an integrated set of race engineering analysis tools. Managed a small group of developers. Software capabilities included vehicle component data management, comprehensive setup logging, data viewing, and analysis tools – quasi-static simulation, suspension, aero, and gear analysis, and ballast calculator.

Performed comprehensive sensor checks, troubleshooting, and field repairs and supported race engineer in analyzing data for car handling and performance.

Was responsible for complete maintenance of 2 Formula Mazdas and 2 Formula Fords. Learned fundamental skills required of a race mechanic including car build from bare chassis to running vehicle, gearbox rebuild and setup, car alignment and setup, and basic vehicle maintenance.

Applied experimental and simulation methods to research and development of submarine silencing. Projects included prediction and experimental validation of the sound in the water resulting from the motion of machinery internal to the submarine, finite element analysis of rubber vibration isolating pipe hanger, transfer function testing of a Trident submarine suspended close to an array of hydrophones.
