Consultant, Technical Consulting And Strategic Planning Firm
Facilitated and wrote several strategic plans for Herrick Laboratories, Purdue University, Town of Patriot, Indiana, and various churches. This strategic planning process was originally developed as a team member at Whirlpool Corporation for technology planning purposes. When the plans listed above were followed, the results were favorable in all cases. For example, the town of Patriot has been following the strategy outlined and the short term results have already resulted in a 25% increase in property values. Participated in various technical and strategic projects for Whirlpool Corp. Developed a strategy for and prototyped a family of non tumble drying clothes products that are to be used in the space under the front loading washer and dryer that is currently being used as a simple storage pedestal. Developed and product designed a towel warming appliance for an advanced development/research group that had no internal product design experience. This design was carried through Underwriters Laboratory approval. Modified the towel warming appliance into a modularized family of food warming appliances that include a new slow cook feature. This product went into production. This activity included the use of quality related techniques such as FMEA, Product Maps, safety audits, hazards lists, test plans, Cp/Cpk prediction , etc. This included an in-depth quality systems related interface with the manufacturing location. The design successfully reduced the direct cost of the existing food warming product by about $100 and added a new slow cooking feature.
Director, Advanced Technology Development and Application, Whirlpool Corporation, Benton Harbor, MI
Led a global team of 40 engineers and scientists in the research and advanced development of laundry, dishwashing, and cooking products. Assisted in the development of and utilized a strategic development process that has led and continues to lead to the development and manufacture of revolutionary appliance products. This included the utilization of contemporary quality prediction and measuring tools. Managed regional research teams in Michigan and Italy. Developed and instituted a strategy of gaining a true technical understanding of the clothes washing process. This resulted in the start of at least six directed research projects at universities in North America and Europe. Among the first learnings of the new research was the understanding that clothes washing requires thermal, chemical, and mechanical energy to clean clothes to a given degree of cleanliness and that raising or lowering any of the types of energy can allow another type of energy to be raised or lowered. The first result was lowering the volume of water thus increasing the amount of chemical energy and lowering the temperature of the water in a vertical axis machine. The second major result was the further lowering of water resulting in even more chemical energy thus allowing for less mechanical energy in a horizontal axis machine resulting in less clothes damage. Led a group of Advanced Development engineers in Italy that developed a strategy for cooing products. This led to the concept of a refrigerator and cooking oven in the same appliance allowing food to be kept cold until automatically turning to the heating mode for "just in time" food preparation. This product went into production in both North America and Europe.
Executive Vice President, Technical Operations, Noetix, Inc., Indianapolis, IN
Co-founded a medical device company. Invented, developed and manufactured a revolutionary automated human eye surgical cutting device that took the failure rate of cataract surgery down from about 10% to about less than 2%. Obtained and maintained device and manufacturing FDA approval status. The surgery system included a $1000 control console and hand piece and a $15 disposable cutting knife. The hand piece design was especially challenging since it had to repeatedly withstand autoclaving temperatures and times. Successfully supported over 100,000 eye surgeries. Established a Maquiladora manufacturing facility in Mexico. This included establishing quality standards and measuring techniques in compliance with FDA requirements while maintaining stringent cost objectives. The business had a positive cash flow within the first year and was successful until the Federal Government lowered the Medicare reimbursement cost of cataract surgery. The result was that with the drastically reduced profit to the ophthalmologists, they subsequently reduced any parts of the surgery in an effort to maintain their level of profit. This included abandoning our $15 disposable device. They now have gone back to the old way of tearing the membrane that holds the lens in place. The rights to the technology were sold to a company that now uses the basic concepts in spinal surgery.
