Background

Residual stresses arise from material fabrication, surface treatment and any process that introduces permanent deformation. They exist independent of external loading and have a significant effect on the fracture resistance, stress corrosion cracking, fatigue life and dimensional control (including flatness) of mechanical components used in many critical engineering applications (e.g., castings, forgings, stampings, rolled products, and machined parts).

When combined with recent advances in laser digitizing/scanning and FE/Analysis, this new technology can also be used to understand the complex three-dimensional relationships between the dimensional distortions of manufactured components and the myriad of manufacturing process conditions that produce them.
