New Development: Cost Effective Acoustic Microscopy

KKAI Associate
RIS is a specialist in the fields of ultrasonics, acoustic microscopy, and resonance techniques for non destructive testing, manufacturing process development and control, and non-destructive characterization of materials. RIS is a leading authority in these fields.

With industry facing intense competition at home and abroad, new non-destructive evaluation ("NDE") technologies offer tremendous opportunities for improved product quality and performance. These technologies are able to make real-time measurements of the microstructure and properties of metals, polymers, and ceramic materials as they are produced. Real-time measurements combined with process knowledge and reliable process equipment enable the consistent production of high quality products at each stage of the manufacturing process.

A new and versatile NDE technique that has been used for characterizing discontinuities and microstructure is acoustic microscopy. Figure 1 shows a schematic of an acoustic microscopy system which was recently developed by RIS. By utilizing commercial software and off-the-shelf hardware, KKAI can supply a system faster and at about two thirds the cost of OEM systems.

Figure 2 shows an acoustic micrograph of a dime showing the remarkable detail that can be detected with this technology. An acoustic micrograph is similar to a conventional ultrasonic C-scan, except the generated image is a high magnification of the surface or internal structure of the material being inspected. This high resolution at magnification has proven to be an invaluable tool in the electronic industry for inspecting integrated circuits and integrated circuit packages.

Acoustic microscopy replaces conventional optical microscopy by eliminating the need for time consuming, destructive sectioning of samples. In addition, since it responds to variations in the mechanical properties in a specimen, it can detect a wide variety of flaws, such as subsurface delaminations, that would not be detected with optical microscopy.

Acoustic microscopy has also been used to detect cracks in ceramics, characterize welds, detect disbonds in adhesive joints, and detect porosity in metals. Thus acoustic microscopy has proved to be an invaluable tool for process development and product quality.
