Visiting Professor, Electrical Engineering, Stanford University

Conducted research in advanced lithography

Adjunct Professor, The University of California, Berkeley

Member of the team studying the management practices of the worldwide semiconductor industry as part of UC Berkeley's Competitive Semiconductor Manufacturing project. Key areas studied included manufacturing yields, employee and equipment productivities, new process introduction, management and organizational comparisons, and other successful technical management practices. Expert in manufacturing yield and yield management, in advanced lithography, in mask and reticle technology, in semiconductor processes and devices, and in inspection and pattern generation equipment using both optical and electron beams.

Professor, Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, Management in Science and Technology Department, Oregon Graduate Institute of Science and Technology

Executive Director, Marketing and Sales, Etec Systems, Inc.

Member of the management buyout group that formed the company. Defined and initially implemented its successful MEBES electron beam lithography product strategy.

Cofounder and Corporate Executive, ATEQ Corporation, Beaverton, OR

Provided the technical/product concepts, direction, and leadership for a venture-capital-funded company designing and manufacturing laser-based lithography equipment for use by manufacturers of semiconductor devices and integrated circuits. The CORE 2000 Reticle Writer was the first product introduced and was selected by Industrial Research and Development magazine as one of the 100 top products. Laser pattern generators developed by the company are used by over 60% of the semiconductor IC's produced in the world for some of their mask/reticle layers.

Director, Technology Development, Intel Corp., Aloha, OR, Santa Clara, CA

Responsibilities included technology development activity in the Portland area to support Intel's Portland-based businesses. The facility included a large pilot line integrated into the production wafer fabrication line, process development, exploratory device and circuit design, design aids, mask making, and device testing and analysis. Set up an engineering organization chartered to improve manufacturing yields company-wide. Served as Assistant General Manager of Technology Development, to share the management responsibilities for Intel's corporate technology development with the Vice President of Technology. Initiated and developed Intel's first HMOS-CMOS process and built two large and successful engineering organizations from the ground up, eventually staffing over 50 engineers. Increased Intel's manufacturing yields by a factor of two, as measured in one manufacturing plant in a period of one and one-half years. Resolved the technical problems associated with masks, design workstations, tapeout methodology, and mask making, particularly those with Ultratech wafer steppers.

Director, Silicon Technology Laboratory, Bell-Northern Research, Ottawa, Canada
