Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, CA

DOE funded multi-discipline science laboratory operated by the University of California. Engineering Division Director and Principal Investigator. Leader of a division of more than 500 engineers and technical staff. Established a project management board to improve project management across the laboratory, Turned around a major DOE project that was in cost and schedule trouble, Served on review committees for large-scale DOE projects including the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Principal Investigator for two projects: "Thermal Design and Analysis Tools for Dense Wavelength-Division Multiplexed (DWDM) Optical Systems" and "A Machine to Perform Optical Recovery of Mechanical Audio Recordings" for the Library of Congress, Modernized the fabrication facilities, processes and engineering design methodologies. Led the development of precision and meso-scale design and fabrication capabilities in support of the "Molecular Foundry" the Lab’s new nano-science user facility. Created "DesignWorks", an innovative approach to providing design and engineering support to small-scale science projects that make up the majority of the labs efforts.

Identifyied and realizing the commercial value of laboratory research by establishing and managing projects to developed new products for Raychem's market aligned divisions worldwide. Managed the successful project to development and manufacture of EDFAs for analog fiber optics broadband systems. Managed a collaborative project with British Telecom Research Laboratory to design and build integrated remote pumped Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFA) and fiber organizer system. Established and maanged a colaboration with Clemson University to develop SLA based rapid tooling expertise including use of KeltoolTM to reduce product development cycle time for molded parts by as much as 90%. Designed, prototyped and tested High Voltage power cable protection systems. Developed novel composite materials and systems for sound management in automobiles.

Fiber Optic Telecommunications Systems, Raynet Corporation, (sold to Ericsson) Menlo Park, CA

Founder, Director of Systems Engineering and Project Management. Established, managed and grew the engineering team from five to 230 scientists engineers and technical staff. Development of system architecture for Passive Optical Network (PON) based fiber optics communications system, including TR 303 and SONET. Demonstrated worlds first phone call over a PON system. Initiated and managed partnership with British Telecom Research Labs for optical systems. Initiated and managed partnership with Pulsecom Corporation for a joint development program for a SONET based NGDLC communications system. Managed partnership with DBP and the FTZ in Germany. Completed successful development and test of a fiber optic serial bus telephone system.Established and managed two development groups in Menlo Park and Carlsbad California to develop a working prototype fiber-to-the-Home telephone system. This was successfully completed under budget and ahead of schedule enabling a $25M contract with BellSouth Enterprises.

Design Engineer and Manager of Product Development, Raychem, Telecom Division

Invented, designed, prototyped and tested novel composite materials and products for cable protection systems for worldwide markets.

Manufacturing Engineer, Novel Drug Delivery Systems, Alza Corporation

Designed, built and tested machines for manufacturing radically new drug delivery devices such as OcusertTM, a glaucoma treatment device, ProgestasertTM, an intrauterine device (IUD) and a drug delivery mechanism for an ambulatory IV system.
