We conducted an investigation into the cause for corrosion. The corrosion outwardly appears as mounds of corrosion product, primarily on 4-mm thick hull plates above the waterline.

The results of my metallurgical investigation indicate that the 4-mm 5083-H321 alloy plate in your vessel is susceptible to pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking (also known as 'sensitized') due to manufacturing problems with the original plate.

Alloy 5083 can be used in marine applications successfully, but it must experience specific rolling and heat treatment conditions to prevent sensitization. Due to corrosion problems that are now coming to light around the world, 5083-H321 should not be specified even though some good results may have been obtained in the past. Based on my investigation, I would recommend 5083-H116, which has been shown to have corrosion resistance superior to that of 5083-H321.

The only way to solve this corrosion problem permanently is to replace all of the affected plate.
