A sample ski-lift safety bar was provided for analysis. Along one side of the weld that attached a triangular plate for the middle footrest assembly, there was a crack indication that had been revealed by NDT. Icut that section of tube, weld metal and plate approximately 2 cm either side of the indication. I then cut down to either side of the indication and revealed the crack face without damage to the fracture surface. This fracture surface clearly shows signs of fatigue (Figure 1).
