A 15 year-old client stated that she lived in a house that had a strange smell, and that she had missed many days of school because she had been sick. Other family members were also experiencing a variety of symptoms, which included:

The girl and her family were living in humid conditions and they suspected the growth of molds. They were suffering from exposure to toxic chemicals (mycotoxins) produced by molds. This young girl, and her 80 year-old grandmother, were particularly susceptible to the mycotoxins and many deaths have been reported in elderly people.

These molds (e.g. Stachybotrys chartarum) are fungi that grow throughout the natural and built environment. They grow on nitrogen-poor, cellulose rich materials such as hay, straw and building materials (ceiling tiles, wall paper, paper covering on gypsum wallboard). The Center for Disease Control and many state health agencies caution that mold particulates are present in indoor and outdoor air. In nature molds help break down dead materials and can be found growing on soil, foods, plant matter, and other items. Molds produce microscopic cells called "spores" which spread easily through the air. Live spores act like seeds, forming new mold growths (colonies) when they find the right conditions, such as moisture and nutrients in your home and various places in/on your body.

Exposure to molds and their toxins can cause severe injury to numerous organs, often resulting in long-term sequelae. As an experienced Toxicologist, this consultant was able to make the correlation between such exposure and their health-related problems.
