Based on experience in electric propulsion, especially on the General Motors EV1, this consultant was asked by Delco Remy management to put together a team of experts to design and develop new propulsion systems for the expanding electric vehicle market.
This involved recruiting engineers with advanced degrees in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Machine Design, Power Electronics, and Battery Engineering. It also required searching industry and academia for companies and universities doing outstanding work in these fields. This consultant found organizations doing work that Delco Remy was interested in supporting in areas including:
Electric propulsion systems
High power density MOSFETS
Switched reluctance motors
Future Truck Hybrid
Electric racing programs, closed course and land speed record
Induction motors, EV1 vehicle, advanced battery packs
Advanced power semiconductors
High density superconductors
Electric buses
Electrically Variable Transmission
We were able to utilize the knowledge gained in these programs combined with the skill of our new technical staff to compete successfully for large EV development contracts with DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). Our most successful DARPA project was to develop two new electric vehicles, to be operated on a military base at the Crane Naval Depot. One of the vehicles was a 22' electric shuttle bus used to provide inter-base transportation for Crane personnel. The other vehicle was an electric S-10 pickup truck which was used for light hauling around the base.
The highlight of Delco Remy's participation in the electric propulsion program was, without a doubt, the EV1 electric vehicle. We provided the propulsion motor, a high efficiency induction design with a copper squirrel-cage rotor and a wound field stator. Tests showed that the motor achieved 95 to 98% efficiency over the torque and speed range. We also provided the 312 volt lead-acid battery pack featuring an isolated inductive charging system and ground-fault detection. Later we designed and built a nickel-metal hydride battery pack to provide increased performance and range for the EV1.
