In 2006-2007 this consultant executed a project on non-medical factors influencing epidemics and used Avian Flu as an example. The project entailed a retrospective collection of data on the dissemination of existing legislation and guidelines, and the undertaken measures with regards to avian flu epidemic in Greece, Turkey and Cyprus.
A qualitative comparison of such implemented measures (as reported by health officials and individuals in the farming industry) versus country-specific and EU-guidelines comprised the main objective of the project. This consultant collaborated with individuals from these countries in order to address a number of specific aims:
- Recording of the specific regulations, processes and procedures through which exchange of health information is achieved between Greece and its neighboring countries, especially as this relates to epidemics such as avian flu.
- Evaluation of the extent to which these correspond to the actual process in pertinent environments (government agencies, health institutions, airports, farming industry).
- Identification and recording of possible shortcomings in these procedures and the ways in which these affect valid and timely data collection and dissemination between countries.
- Identification of possible trends in these shortcomings as they relate to the avian flu epidemic as well as epidemics in the past.
- Drafting of proposals for the overall improvement in the data collection and exchange strategies.
This consultant developed 3 data collection tools that were used to gather information from Greece, Cyprus and Turkey that would be necessary to address the project aims. After data collection was complete, this consultant analyzed the data using a statistical software package (SAS). The results of this project were presented at a seminar at Yale University.
