This consultant was asked to look into a case involving a police vehicle responding to an emergency call with it's emergency equipment activated, running a red light and striking a vehicle causing serious injury to the civilian. This consultant found the officers that investigated the incident had inappropriately applied formulae to the crash. It was determined that the speed of the police vehicle going through the red light was significantly lower than the estimation of the officers. Through the use of an EDR download, crush and momentum calculations, this consultant was able to find the proper pre-crash speed of the police vehicle. The officers had assumed that both vehicles had skidded to a stop post impact when they had no evidence to back up their hypothesis.
The end result is that the evidence this consultant put forward corresponded with eye witnesses at the scene, the event data recorder download and momentum formulae avoiding a lengthy and costly trial.
