Since January 2002, just over 21% of all the 7075-T76511 lots produced in the company have received additional age treatment due to conductivities below the specification requirements. The unnecessary pressure that these add-ages place on the delivery performance is clear; however, they also have a subtle, yet significant financial impact when considering the additional manhours and power requirements. In September 2001, Quality/Metallurgy initiated an investigation into the numerous add-ages that were occurring at that time (refer to Quality/Metallurgy Report QR01-16). Recommendations were offered; however, with the events that unfolded after September 11, focus on the 7075-T76 add-age issue was lost. In March 2002, the Plant Manager formed a Continuous Improvement team to refocus efforts at resolving the add-age situation. Using both historical data from the previous investigation and recently collected data, the following report presents new hypotheses for the add-age condition and recommendations for its reduction.
