In the battlefield these small lightweight remote controlled robots are used to minimize human exposure to potentially lethal IED's or roadside bombs.
We were asked if we could add an additional tool to our existing robot that would be multi-functional without affecting any of the existing functionality. It would have to be able to both expose the buried explosives and be able to cut the wires that would be used for remotely detonate these IED'S. This consultant was given the assignment to design and develop a prototype that would accomplish these tasks. One of the many tools our robot had was a pair of articulated gripper arms used for grasping objects of up to 2.00'' thick. Each of these arms has its own fixed pivot. This consultant's design was to add one half of a spade shovel mounted at a 90 degree angle to each arm. This would still allow the gripper to function as intended when opened and present a shovel for digging when closed. This was the easy part of the design. The more difficult part of the task was to incorporate a wire cutting tool. This consultant wanted to use the opening and closing motion of the gripper arms to accomplish this, but the fact that they did not have a common pivot made this action challenging. The solution was to design a custom wire cutting tool that would mount to each half of the shovel. Each cutter would have its own floating mount. By controlling the amount of float built into each cutter half, when the cutters would surround a wire they would be able respond like a single pivot cutting tool, cutting the wires that were essential for the detonation of the IED, rendering them ineffective and saving many soldiers and Marines from death. This multifunction tool has been assigned a patent.
