The last few paragraphs in stainless steel texts may mention that certain liquid metals can cause small intergranular cracks under limited circumstances. Depending upon the entire situation, the original small intergranular portion may be concealed in a larger subsequent fracture. If one only looks at the major portion of the fracture the ductile over load or fatigue like appearance of the majority of the fracture becomes the final diagnosis. This results in an erroneous conclusion.
The expert is skilled in examining the entire fracture surface so that such keys are found. With proper care in a Scanning Electron Microscope one may find the small drop of copper that was the real culprit. The expert is also skilled in reviewing the prior processing to determine where the contamination occurred. The levels of contamination can be quite small. Experience has found solutions in seemingly trivial events as tubes rolling over copper bearing screws supporting wooden rails. The screws were originally counter sunk but with wear, tubes contacted the copper. Other, more obvious sources include welding clamps, often made of copper for good heat transfer.
