The ring rolling process is widely used to produce seamless titanium and superalloy rings for critical jet engine parts. The ring rolling process has significant advantages over other processes such as closed die forging, casting and welding, in providing significant material savings while reducing the machining time and maintaining high quality of the product. This paper presents an experimental radial ring rolling mill that has been designed and fabricated in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Ohio University for the investigation of both cold and hot ring rolling processes. Experiments were performed using lead at room temperature and various aluminum alloys at elevated temperatures as the ring material. This radial ring rolling mill is capable of rolling rings with initial diameters of 5-7² up to maximum of 15² , with 2² minimum wall thickness and 6² maximum height. As the experimental results show, the cavities of the profile roll filled completely, while reaching the final diameter of the desired ring.
