Technology enables a wide range of products and solutions for customers, and many find a platform approach is the key to suit the increasing demands for customization. From mobile phones to the latest passenger cars, the key to keep up with this change is to choose the right "common denominator" to produce in volume and creating modular design features to suit customer needs. This associate was the key architect in developing a robotic automation platform that allowed a base model to be produced in volume while minimizing the customized portion. This enabled a high degree of re-use and reduced the custom-engineered content cost from 50% to 10%.
The automation market is currently dominated by so-called system integrators who blend commercially-available products into a final manufacturing solution. The typical approach is to buy a robotic arm from a small group of available companies and to spend 2-3 months designing end effectors, enclosures, and programming to handle a specific customer's needs. This is often done during the critical path of a larger solution, and technical risk factors depend upon the Engineered portion. This associate was able to develop a concept that allows a standard base model to be produced outside of the critical path of projects, and minimized the Engineered portion to just a fraction of the overall solution. The platform development process started by surveying the automation market and gathering input from key stakeholders including customers, vendors, and collecting the various types of technology available. A comprehensive human factors study exposed potential ergonomic and packaging issues that were overcome in the final solution. The associate also developed a web survey to select a product name that incorporated culturally-sensitive factors given the global customer market scope of end-users. In the end, a modular approach was specified to standardize the interface of tools to the robotic platform, as it became apparent that customers demanded specific manufacturers of process tools such as dispensers and screwdrivers. Given the huge variety of process tools that could be deployed, the platform approach was key to complete projects with limited Engineering resources. The final platform solution had common elements that allowed cost-down efforts and sourcing from low-cost vendors in China, and continued to be flexible enough that every deployed solution could be unique to customer demands.
