Following is a summary of an instance in which this associate provided Forensic Investigation assistance, demonstrating specific industry expertise in a matter involving a fatal motorcycle accident.
This KKAI Associate was called upon to investigate a fatal motorcycle accident in which a motorcycle lost control on a corner, slid across 4 lanes of traffic and was struck head on by a sport utility vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. The motorcycle rider was killed instantly. An examination of the physical evidence from the scene produced speeds which were below the maximum speed a vehicle could maneuver the corner, and the rider's skill level.
An examination of roadway engineering and design yielded few answers. A vehicle examination was conducted and it was determined that there was a commonly used automotive cleaner all over the tire including the tread. Field testing of a contaminated tire and an uncontaminated tire proved that the automotive cleaner reduced the coefficient of friction of the tire to the roadway enough to exceed the critical curve speed of the corner. The motorcycle with the reduced coefficient of friction of the tire exceeded the critical curve speed at a much lower speed than an uncontaminated tire, lost control and crashed.
A further examination revealed that the helmet did not meet the safety requirements for the territorial jurisdiction in which the crash occurred.
