The Center for Advanced Imaging of BIDMC is located near a power plant which serves the medical center and other nearby hospital facilities. Because the heavy diesel engines of the power plant produce significant vibrations in its vicinity, BIMDC and the suppliers of a new ultra-sensitive magnetic resonance imaging system (MRI) were concerned about the effects of these vibrations on the MRI. A consultant to the supplier measured the vibrations at the site of the new MRI, found these to be excessive, and proposed mounting the MRI on a large block of concrete supported on a bed of sand and gravel.
BIDMC asked this consultant to verify the situation. This consultant concluded on the basis of calculations that the proposed installation would amplify, rather than attenuate, the vibrations to which the MRI would be exposed. This consultant made extensive vibration measurements to ascertain the variability of the vibrations that the power plant introduces into the ground and designed an isolation system consisting of a massive concrete base, supported on air springs. A structural engineering firm did the actual structural design, and the air spring supplier assisted in sizing of the springs and in developing their installation details. Measurements we made recently indicated that the vibrations on this base are well within the specified limits for the MRI.
After installation of the MRI, this consultant carried out additional measurements to verify the performance of the isolation system.
