This KKAI Consultant, acting as a police traffic homicide investigator, investigated a single vehicle fatality accident where a truck spun off the roadway into the ditch, rolled on its side, flipped in the air from impacting a ditch, ejected the driver, and finally spun to rest. Minimal physical evidence was present and no witnesses were available. The accident raised questions as to what induced the vehicle to leave the roadway, which was newly constructed, and was the roadway a factor.
The consultant completed a survey of the accident scene measuring the evidence available and completed a thorough inspection of the vehicle along with a comparison of injuries to the driver obtained from an autopsy report. The investigation revealed that the vehicle crossed the center line when the driver over corrected inducing a Yaw. While the vehicle was in its Yaw it left the roadway after spinning 90 degrees to the right and impacted the bottom of a grass ditch. After impacting the ditch and as a result of the speed and energy, the vehicle flipped 180 degrees, landing on the rear tires. Evidence of injuries and blood paths on the hood supported the driver being ejected from the vehicle that was also confirmed by the Drivers momentum of the crash. After ejecting the Driver the vehicle spun and came to rest. Utilizing speed calculations from the yaw marks of the vehicle, the investigation was able to conclude that the driver was travelling well in excess of the maximum posted speed limit. Further the inspection shown that the driver was unrestrained in the vehicle which aided in the ejection from the vehicle. The consultant was able to relieve the roadway as contributing factor to the Accident. The consultant further recreated the accident through both 2D and 3D simulations to reaffirm the findings.
Finally as a Police DWI Instructor and Practitioner, the Consultant completed an investigation into the possibility of Alcohol/Drugs contributing to the Accident.
