This KKAI Consultant, acting as a Private Accident Reconstructionist, was called upon to investigate a multiple vehicle, multiple impact Traffic Accident in which several people were injured on the Interstate. A full size pickup truck attempting to pass a vehicle on a four lane median divided interstate lost control, and subsequently crossed the median encroaching into oncoming traffic. Upon entering the opposing traffic the pickup truck collided with a Semi-Trailer, rotated further into oncoming traffic and impacted head on with a large SUV. The pickup truck then came to rest back in the median and the SUV came to rest on the interstate travel lanes. An unknown time later the SUV was struck broadside by a Semi ending the collision.
Questions posed by the investigation and Counsel were:
Utilizing evidence collected during a topographical roadway survey and vehicle inspections, speeds were able to be determined for each sequence of the accident. These calculations were also supported by momentum and vectoring calculations. With speed values, time was then factored for each phase of the Accident. With speed and time values known, investigation revealed that there was ample time for the Second Semi to react and avoid a Crash with the SUV. The Topographical survey confirmed that the driver of the Second Semi had ample sight distance of the complete accident footprint beginning at the time the pickup truck entered into the median and the Accident progressed. The investigation showed with the time and distances available, minimally, the third and final impact could have been avoided. Comparing injuries sustained to the occupants it could then be shown that substantial injury could have been reduced by the perception and reaction of the Second Semi.
Review of the air bag modules and driver log books added to the findings. Further it was determined that with pre-impact speeds of the pickup truck it was error of the driver to pass another vehicle as the pickup was already travelling over the maximum posted speed limit. Lastly the investigation concluded that the Semi-Trailer had no significance and would not have been able to aid in any avoidance and the SUVs following distance of the Semi-Trailer was not sufficient to allow for any perception-reaction time to successfully avoid the second impact.
